Wok & Grill
Facebook

A favorite restaurant in our house is Wok & Grill.  First off, this is by far the best Chinese/Japanese food in Topeka. My family first went to Wok & Grill to celebrate a birthday and after sampling a little bit of everyone’s picks, I declared my love for this little restaurant. The atmosphere is basic with decorations that you can find at most Asian restaurants. This is a “walk up to order then sit down” restaurant. There isn’t an abundance of seating, but enough to accommodate the space. Something I am not a big fan of is that is always chilly. So make sure you have a jacket available or order soup to warm you up. Every once in a while my mom and I have a Monday were she doesn’t work and I don’t have class during lunch time. So on this particular Monday we decided on Wok & Grill for lunch. We got there around 12:30pm and somehow missed the lunch rush from the Kansas Dept. of Revenue just a few doors down.  The restaurant is in a shopping center and depending on the time of day the parking can be iffy.  Wok & Grill is owned and operated by a young Asian couple, with frontend help. We always seem to have the pleasure of having the same young man taking our order.  As a plus the prices here are very reasonable.

My personal favorite dish at Wok &Grill is the Singapore Mei Fun Noodles. But for this, post I decided to review something new.  I ordered the Honey Chicken Combo that came with fried rice and a choice of crab Rangoon or an egg roll. This time I choose the egg roll, totaling to just $6.99. To share, we ordered shrimp tempura. Tempura is a Japanese dish that is made of seafood or vegetables that are covered in batter and lightly fried, these are absolutely worth the $4.99 for six shrimps. My mother ordered the house special soup for $5.99.

The House Soup is a delicious soup chock-full of vegetables and meats and a delicious beef and fish sauce broth. Tender chicken, pork, beef and shrimp in a broth filled with broccoli, cabbage, carrots, onions, snow peas and water chestnuts. The broth has a deep, rich, beefy, flavor with under tones of a light fish sauce. It taste as if it had been cooking for days. The meats are deliciously seasoned and perfectly tender and the vegetables have a bright, vibrant color with a slight crunch to them. The soup is served with fried wonton chips.

The fried white meat chicken is cooked to perfection. The slight crunch pairs well with the sweet honey sauce. I could easily eat this every time. The egg roll is a perfect balance of vegetables and chicken with a great crunch. Sometimes, I find that Chinese restaurants over- pepper the filling of the egg rolls, but that's not the case here. Everything is perfectly balanced. And the fried rice is your typical Asian fried rice filled with fresh onions, peas and carrots. However compared to other restaurants, it is by far the best.

I’ve had tempura at other restaurants, but I've never had shrimp tempura. The crunchiness of the tempura mixed with the soft chewiness of the shrimp dipped in the yum yum sauce, combines the flavors and textures to a peak of deliciousness. Yum Yum Sauce a traditional Japanese sauce served with shrimp.
